Numbers- Discussions and Questions

4 comments:

  1. I have a question regarding numbers 20 and the death of Aaron...
12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not trust in me enough to honour me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.

    1. So when did they not honour Him? was it by even just going to the Temple with this request? or am I missing something...

    2. I am guessing Aaron died then and not Moses too because his work wasn't done yet?

    Thanks!

  2. Don't worry about answering this one Pastor Brandon I figured it out, I think it is because Moses struck the rock but God told him to speak to it...the previous time Moses had to strike it but he didn't listen to God this time and speak to it....I think....

    1. Right on! Haha, I'm glad my tardy reply led to some searching on your part. He disobeyed, and what God seems most upset about is that he says "we" referring to himself and Aaron. They took credit for the miracle rather than letting God be glorified through it. (Deuteronomy 32:50-52)

Here is Brown's commentary on the incident in Numbers 20:11.

"The command Numbers 20:8 was "Speak ye unto the rock." The act of smiting, and especially with two strokes, indicates violent irritation on the part of Moses; as does also his unseemly mode of addressing the people: "Hear now, ye rebels." The form too of the question, "must we, etc.," directs the people not, as ought to have been the case, to God as their deliverer, but to Moses and Aaron personally. In fact the faithful servant of God, worn out by the reiterated perversities of the people, breaks down; and in the actual discharge of his duty as God's representative before Israel, acts unworthily of the great function entrusted to him. Thus, Moses did not "sanctify God in the eyes of the children of Israel." Aaron might have checked the intemperate words and acts of Moses, and did not. Hence, God punishes both by withdrawing them from their work for Him, and handing over its accomplishment to another."
